Our Story

Unto to Uttermost Parts of the Mountains

For over 30 years, we have visited indigenous communities taking them medical, dental and social work brigades with the intention of bringing the Gospel of Jesus among the people in need in the state of Durango and Nayarit in the beautiful country of Mexico.

We have, quite literally, taken tons of food, clothes and medicine across Mexico's rugged terrain to reach marginalized people groups. As a result of our efforts, bonds of trust were created over the years between us and these wonderful people.

One of the gravest problems that they have among them is the lack of education and opportunities for their young people. This has led them to try and make their own way in the world by getting involved with drug dealing by growing the plants needed to make them. Since they have no other options for a better life, they cannot find jobs or career opportunities because of their lack of education.

It is not uncommon among indigenous tribes in Mexico to see young girls carrying their own children around on their hips. In many cases they are girl-wives and sister-wives. They are a man's property and their only worth is the ability to bear children and care for their husband. These young women are often left to their own devices to survive since the man can easily run them out of his own house.

After the great violence that happened in Mexico in the mid 2000's, were weren't able to travel up to mountains as we often did. But the Lord has his own plans. "Soy Mujer" began as a student project with three students from the Cora people group in the state of Nayarit. I opened my home to them and since then, the number of students has varied. It has changed a lot since we first began back in June of 2006, but our vision has been the same; to change lives by creating an opportunity through education.

Soy Mujer has been a beacon of hope for young women who had no chance of a future. One of my greatest joys is to see how the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ transforms them completely.
